Welcome to the margins

This is a personal encyclopedia: musings on whatever I happen to be thinking about, filed so that a stranger can find their way around. It is not a diary in reverse-chronological order, even though the front page shows recent writing first.

The organising idea is simple:

• Topics are the broad shelves — one per entry, like the volumes of a reference work.
• Tags are the threads that cut across shelves, so a piece about memory can sit under Mind yet still connect to writing and time.
• Search is there for when you already know what you're after.

A good home page answers two questions at once: what is this? and where do I go next?
